January 2000 News

Astalavista, JT.

Well, it`s been quite a busy week for the IT community on both sides of the KHS staffroom door; imagine Bucklé`s Bint without Brakes. But aside from indecipherable subtlety, JT came into KHS for the last time, digicam in hand, facilitating many humourous adverts of the future. Of equal importance is the fact that a webcam of the KHS 6th form commonroom may be set up, thanks to Pet0r, which may replace the adverts during school hours. Mohh. This follows the introduction of rented CCTV to KHS for two weeks, followed by telling people about The Clock and putting money back into padding out Wilheims chair.
Anyway, JT`s moving to Rio has also meant that Lab6 will be getting the tone right all the time, since he is no longer here for your amusification. Instead you get:

[13:21] * Abattis has gone to update Lab6
[13:22] [Jak] with what ?
[13:22] [Abattis] well
[13:22] [Abattis] rip out last years news
[13:23] [Abattis] try and come up with some type of suitably amusificating message
[13:23] [Abattis] fuq kn0ws

The text menu got some skills, so something useful was achieved, and we'll be having no more complaints from Eris Free Networks, heh? Our box has had a few (heh) uptime problems in the past, but after a kernel upgrade [JaSun] is confident Lab6 should be up for a long time, this time. On the subject of long times, after around 11 months of constant idling, #Lewis is declared The Most Diverse IRC Chan Ever (TM). Apart from this machination of idlers, people may have spotted controversy on one of our reciprocals, www.DarkStone.org.uk. This stems from the Games section, which comments on which is better, Q3 or UT? The old JT view was that neither is better. But one must be a little bit better. And now I have declared myself Dictator-for-Life, Lab6 declares Q3 better. This also means smearing any UT-players, as if they couldn`t do it themselves, *cough*.

Success!

LabNet appears to work with everything except internet access - our host machine is somewhat unreliable, what with it's position and all. Pictures of the test are available on the LabNet page if you're interested.

In more conventional news, we have a load more pictures, some of which will make their way to the existing gallery, which has been redone with thumbnail pictures to make it easier to find which photo you're looking for.

As for the videos, it may be a little longer before they're all up, because of hard drive space on the host. However, a couple of the better ones are available right now.

Lab6 begins LabNet™ trials
Saturday, 14th January 2000, 12:20am

As of next Monday, Lab6 will be testing the first generation of LabNet handsets outside Laboratory conditions, so to speak. Although we've been trialling the software for several months, this is the first beta test. Unfortunately, we have plenty of beta testers already, so you'll just have to wait until the public beta testing phase, which is on schedule to start sometime in March. For more information, click here.

If you're wondering, the waiting list for a handset is huge. The project has had massive support since it's inception in December 1997. Your best bet is to find a friend who owns one and use his. Or hers. No, hang on... his.

Yes, it was me you heard, Mullonica

Note the timestamp. Is it real? Could we possibly be hosted inside the school? From a laptop? Wirelessly? Certainly.

There's summore artwork on the... wait for it... artwork page, but only one more picture. More sounds and pictures almost certainly coming next week, as well as the possibility of getting the videos ready to download.

More Buckleh

Just for the record, here's another Register article about your friend and mine, Bucklé. Oh, and since the caning thing got chucked out of the public consciousness (hopefully thanks to Lab Six), the censorship of Lab6 looks likely to continue and because nobody knows what the hell is happening in #lewis, the green box didn't stay long.

One thing to remember, though, is that the school is nevertheless an OPPRESSOR, and the censoring page can be found as an Other 'Article' now, on the right side of the page.

I've actually changed quite a bit of the site recently - just minor, tiny things... things that sweep out some obsolescence in the writing, and tidy up here and there. Including: Much cleaner HTML in the Yearbook, rationalized links page, removed msdis.html (not original Lab6 stuff), updated Best Games to include new games and better adjusted opinions, put a few updates on the Languages page and finally, finished the Subversiveness Test.

Scane
Friday, 7th January 2000, 6:30pm

The Times recently held a poll, the results of which showed that around two thirds of adults were backing the reintroduction of the cane. This must be put to a stop. Read the plan.

Non-blind readers (the Braille edition of Lab6 being too hot to touch (ho ho ho), and therefore a completely ridiculous idea) will have noticed the Ongoing Events boxout at the top of this front page. This should in theory make it easier to track updates on the major parts of Lab6. It'll go if it gets annoying, but not until then. Obviously.

Beast partially defeated
Wednesday, 5th January 2000, 8:05pm

To visit Lab6 inside school, use http://leguin.openprojects.net/~lab6 instead of Lab6. This is only a partial solution, but better than nothing, and extremely good if you get caught looking at it, as it may force them to filter the word "Lab6" from the school computers, cutting out vast sections of scientific information.

Two new #lewis cartoons as well. You know the drill.

Oh No! Etc! More Sounds!

Being in the hyper modern, nuclear powered, silver suited space age that, as of Saturday, we are, what better than to explain how ill informed it is to think the third millennium begins in 2001. Let me explain carefully.

One of the few consequences of it being the year 2000 is that the Decimal Time page makes a lot more sense, and the clock is easier to understand.

All those months ago, back in the real Lab6, on VC Day, a lot of stuff went on, but all most people remember is the fact that we had a video camera in there. The full story is more complicated. We'd fed Vinné a whole can of Red Bull earlier in anticipation of the increased anarchy it would cause in him. To record this, we had the VC, of course, but we also had two D's on standby for the whole lesson, which until now, we haven't listened to. Who could blame us? We spent the last six months laughing about the video's so much that we completely forgot about the tapes. Therefore, more sounds coming soon.
